What is Seva Yoga?

dandelionYoga's often thought of as the physical and mental practice we so commonly see at yoga studios, retreats, and living rooms. But there's an important component to yoga that is often missed in our culture -- the concept of community, selfless service, attachment, grounding in common bond. "Seva" is an ancient term for "string", which symbolizes the interconnectedness between ourselves and others. As a practice, Seva arises from two branches of yoga: karma yoga (yoga of action) and bhakti yoga (devotion inspired by divine love).

In this free market world of business, where studios and teachers have to make some trade-offs (like being able to just give away yoga like the ancients could), there is still a LARGE place for service. Seva Yoga is a way of looping ones talents, time, experiences back into the community.

At Breathe Yoga & Wellness, we will offer ample opportunities to receive yoga in exchange for service work. Fees for yoga, including Seva Yoga, will be posted prior to the studio's opening. Read more HERE about the studio, and sign up at the website to learn about becoming a Founding Member, or just to stay abreast of opening events announcements.

Peace & Joy!
