The Importance of Selecting a Meditation Cushion

There are as many ways to meditate as there are people. You could try sitting on a chair for starters, or simply sit on the floor if you want. The whole idea is to find a sitting position that’s most comfortable for you.

There are definitely some advantages of sitting on a meditation cushion:

  1. The cushion acts as a visual reminder that prompts you into your daily practice.
  2. A cushion is generally affordable.
  3. They support and encourage a tall back.
  4. They provide a stable seat.
  5. They’re lightweight and can be carried anywhere.

How to pick a good meditation cushion:

  1. Search “meditation cushion” on Amazon or Google for a preview of the vast number of styles and selections. Another term commonly used within the practice of mediation and yoga is “zafu”. Some good shopping sites include Barefoot Yoga, YogaOutlet, Hugger Mugger, and of course, Amazon.
  2. Consider your meditation posture: Do you prefer meditating with your legs crossed or kneeling on a cushion?
  3. Factor in what makes you comfortable. A comfortable meditation pillow will motivate you to meditate consistently! For those who prefer to kneel, there’s a particular type of meditation cushion that’s better for kneeling. There are stools, crescent shapes, firm and fluffy. Try different types of cushions at your local yoga studios, traditional tea houses, and Eastern gift shops.
  4. Consider the material used as filling and as covering. The main materials used to make meditation cushions are:
    • Kapok fiber for firmer cushions.
    • Wool durable
    • Cotton
    • Polyester
    • Buckwheat hulls for more give

Kapok fiber helps to created firmer cushions. Your body is held more steadily, with very little bulging. Buckwheat hulls are the opposite – they give way and bulge under your weight. They’re therefore softer to sit on and make less sturdy zafus. Wool cushions are durable, lightweight and extremely comfortable. They support better blood flow and are recommended by most experts. However, wool cushions aren’t as firm as kapok-filled cushions. There are cushions designed for frequent travelers as well that are just filled with air.

How a cushion supports you and the qualities of sitting well:

  1. Your back should be straight. This helps your body to remain alert and focused.
  2. You need to be stable. This allows you to meditate without distractions
  3. Comfort is paramount. Ensure you’re comfortable and relaxed during your meditation. If you feel some pain, simply switch your posture. This allows you to meditate for longer.
  4. Some traditions of meditation honor the rule-of-thumb of hips sitting up slightly above the knees. Others recommend criss-crossed shins or half-lotus posture, where a thin rectangular cushion or folded blanket would be fine. The most important factor in making a selection is comfort.

And design-wise, there a so many beautiful textures, colors, and fabrics. A meditation cushion can become as personal of an item as a yoga mat.
